About Us

Social Responsibility

Mutual Responsibility will run through the heart of our business in years to come.

  • The statement below reflects our position today. We expect that it will develop over time as we develop our understanding of the challenges and opportunities that we face.

This commitment not only governs the conduct of our core business activity, but also extends into our interactions with the communities and society in which we conduct that business.

  • We recognise we will continue to have both direct and indirect social, economic and environmental impacts in the communities within which our members and employees live and work, and beyond.
  • Our stakeholders have higher expectations of us, as a mutual, than of many other organisations. We have chosen to be socially responsible irrespective of whether it delivers a direct business benefit. In explaining what we do we will be open about any negative impacts and celebrate our positive impacts.
  • We must raise our own awareness, and that of our members, customers and other stakeholders, about the social, environmental and economic impacts of our activity, both positive and negative.
  • Our social responsibilities extend beyond our obligations to our members so we will challenge, and be challenged by, our members with regard to what we do and how far we go in our ‘socially responsible’ activity.
  • Our members trust us to make decisions on their behalf. We will engage with them to agree what we do in this area, and to define a set of principles that will govern our actions.
  • Our commitment to society and to the environment will be part of how we do business and we will measure and report on our performance.

A team of people headed by Paul Mills, director of corporate governance, are dedicated to make this happen.

Ethical Steering Group - Chaired by Paul Mills, this group of senior managers from across the business meet monthly to ensure that our commitment to being ethical, socially responsible and a model of compliance is delivered. This includes all aspects of Mutual Responsibility.

Karen Moir, director of organisational development, is responsible for creating an environment across the Group with people management and development policies and practises which makes us a great place to work, grow and develop.

Tim Franklin, director of the Member Business, and Gerald Gregory, managing director of BCIG, make sure that we treat our customers fairly and Britannia is known for our great products and putting our customers first.

As group finance director, Phil Lee is responsible for ensuring we remain financially strong and efficient as well as supply chain matters.

We are working with Business in the Community (BITC), who help the UK's top companies improve their positive impact on society. They have recognised the work Britannia has done by giving us a bronze award as one of the top 100 socially responsible companies in the UK. We are committed to building on this performance by taking part in their annual benchmarking exercise the 'BITC corporate responsibility index'. A copy of the feedback report is available here.
