Frequently Asked Questions

We've given some answers to the most common questions we receive about Britannia Membership Reward below. If you have a specific query that isn't covered here, please email us, or call our helpline on 08457 522 522.*

Am I a member?
If you have a Britannia Building Society mortgage, savings account or PIBS then you are a member of the Society. All other products do not offer membership status.

How much is each point worth?
The value of each point for the 2007 reward paid in 2008 was 18p.

I haven't received my payment.
If you have not been paid by 31st March 2008 it is likely that:

  • you have earned less than 25 points if the account is held by, or on behalf of,an adult, or less than 5 reward points if the account is held by, or on behalf of, a child
  • you are not eligible this year as you joined the Society in 2006,
  • you are not due a payment as you are not registered for the scheme (This only applies to people who became members prior to 1997 as people who became members from 1997 onwards did not need to register);
  • you became a member of the Society prior to 1997 but registered for the scheme this year and will receive a payment, where eligible, next year.

If you think you are not registered, please contact us on 08457 522 522* .

I have my household insurance with you, why have I not received a reward?
You are only eligible to receive reward points if you are a member of the Society. Insurance products do not offer membership status.

How has my reward been calculated?
Your payment is based on the number of qualifying products you hold, the value of those products and the length of time that you have been a member of the Society.

I have received a lower reward this year than last. What is the reason for this?
If the amount is lower than last year, it may be that you have closed a product during the year, or the balance on your savings or mortgage account(s) may have reduced. It could also be because the point value has changed or because more people are eligible for the scheme.

Why have I received a cheque when I have savings accounts with you?
Where possible, we will credit your reward to a suitable Britannia investment account. However, not all accounts can have rewards paid into them, such as Regular saver accounts, some bonds, and accounts registered to receive half interest gross and half net.

How can I change which account my reward is paid into?
Where possible, we will credit your reward to the account with the easiest access, e.g. an Instant Access account.

If you would prefer to have future payments credited to a different account, please let us know.

I've received my reward via cheque but do not have a bank account?
If you do not have a bank account or any other means to cash your cheque, simply pop into your local branch, who will be happy to do this for you.

Can I have my reward paid on to my mortgage account?
No. We do not credit payments to mortgage accounts. Your payments will be credited to a suitable savings account or paid by cheque.

Why has my payment had tax deducted? Can I reclaim it?
Your payment will usually be taxed, unless:

  • You have registered a form R85 with us so that we can pay the reward without deduction of tax
  • The reward relates to ISA or CTF products

Non-tax payers can to apply to HM Revenue & Customs to reclaim any tax paid on their reward by sending them a Certificate of Deduction of Tax. If you wish to order a certificate for your reward payment, please contact us.

For those completing an income tax return, the details given on your statement are sufficient for this purpose.

I have not been paid for all of my products. What should I do?
If you have not received payment for a product, check the Notes column on your statement against that product. The reverse of the reward statement will show why the product has not earned points.

If you hold a Britannia product that does not appear on your statement, please contact us.

Why have some of my investments not earned points?
In order to allow as many members as possible to benefit from a payment we have to limit the reward that any member can earn. For investment accounts we set a limit of £22,000 per member.

However, the reward is an additional benefit for Britannia members and those members with higher account balances also benefit from higher interest rates.

Why is my payment different to that of my partner?
Reward payments will only be the same if you hold identical products, with identical balances, for the same length of time.

What is my tenure and how does this affect my points?
Tenure is the length of time that you have been a member of the Society.

The scheme rewards your loyalty to Britannia, therefore if you have been a member for 5 to 9 years you will earn 50% more points. If you have over 10 years membership you will earn double points.

I hold an account on behalf of someone else. How will the reward be paid?
Payments earned on these accounts will be paid directly to the account or a cheque will be issued. It will be separate from any other personal payment earnings of the account holder.

Why is the amount of reward I've received by cheque different than the total reward amount shown on my statement?
In some cases your reward payment may be split and paid by more than one transaction. You could receive your reward into different savings accounts; or you could receive part of your reward into a savings account and part by cheque.
