News Release - November 2007

It's planting season at Britannia

After the recent success of Britannia’s Tree for All campaign members of Britannia staff from Lincoln and Newark branches have planted the first trees in the Britannia Grove Woodland near Wragby on the 21st November 2007. During August and September Britannia pledged to plant a tree for every child saver account opened. This means the woodland will grow by 10,167 trees, which equates to over 20 acres of woodland, thanks to Britannia Building Society.

Britannia Grove is part of the Lincolnshire Limewoods which are ancient woodlands and date back to the Doomsday Book in 1086AD. The woods are home to many plant and wildlife species such as herons, bats, butterflies, woodpeckers and all sorts of insects.

The British countryside today consists of only 2% woodland but for about 7000 years, since the end of the last Ice Age, nearly the whole of Britain was covered with forest. Ancient woodland is Britain’s richest wildlife habitat, but it is now becoming scarce.

It is estimated that one tree will store a fifth of a tonne of carbon dioxide during its 100 year lifetime and therefore 10,000 trees will store 2000 tonnes of carbon dioxide in their lifetime.

Britannia aimed to help increase children’s awareness of the importance of protecting the environment and to help to encourage youngsters to put down roots and start saving for their future.

Neville Richardson, Britannia Group Chief Executive explained, "We are delighted that planting has begun and look forward to watching the Britannia Grove woodland grow over the years. We hope the youngsters visiting the trees will learn how important it is to save both financially and environmentally for a better future. Britannia has some fantastic savings products for children, with our cash Child Trust Fund boasting one of the best interest rates on the market.”
