Staff raise cash for children with cancerBritannia Building Society staff have raised more than £285,000 for children with cancer. In just one year of fundraising, the corporate charity target of £150,000 has been smashed. The staggering donation will be presented to CLIC Sargent at Britannia's headquarters at 12noon on Wednesday (16). CLIC Sargent provides individual support to children and young people with cancer and leukaemia and their families. Many of the Leek-based Society's 5,000 employees have adopted the fundraising spirit. Around 80 people abseiled 220 foot from the top of the glass sided, Exchange Tower in London's Docklands; others baked and sold cakes; took part in monthly dress-down days and sporting events; hosted raffles and quizzes and sold merchandise. Staff from the Treasury team also bared 'nearly' all to pose with strategically placed office equipment for a risqué calendar - which raised more than £1,500. Britannia Chief Executive Neville Richardson (49), his wife Sarah and daughter Carys (24) raised £25,000 by taking part in the Great North Run last October. Neville said: "I am overwhelmed by the generosity of our staff and members and it is fantastic to have raised such a staggering amount for an extremely worthy charity. "CLIC Sargent is not the biggest of charities but the work they do is wonderful. I would like to thank everyone who has supported us during the year." Staff also enlisted the help of members by carrying out collections in branches, at last year's 150th birthday celebrations and other corporate events. At this year's AGM, the Society pledged to donate 10p for each vote cast and handed over a cheque for £36,299. Every day 10 families are told their child has cancer. As the UK's leading children's cancer charity, CLIC Sargent is the only organisation to offer them all round care and support. Carole Easton, CLIC Sargent’s Chief Executive, thanked everyone at Britannia Building Society and its members. "Although we are the UK’s leading children’s cancer charity, we rely entirely on donations to keep running and fundraising on this scale makes a real difference to what we can achieve," she added.
