News Release - 14 March 2007

Every vote counts

Nearly 1.5 million members of Britannia Building Society are being asked to endorse Britannia's approach to corporate social responsibility, through a unique member survey.

The short questionnaires are being sent out as part of the voting packs for Britannia's Annual General Meeting (AGM). In addition to voting for the Directors who will lead Britannia's business, members are being asked to give their thoughts on Britannia's charitable giving and environmental policies*.

Britannia believes it is the first financial services organisation to engage its members in this way.

Neville Richardson, Group Chief Executive of Britannia, explained: "Britannia's members are the owners of the business and it is important that they are involved in the Society's future. For that reason, in addition to endorsing how the Society is managed, we are also asking members to have a say in Britannia's approach to social and ethical issues through the unique member survey."

Britannia's AGM will be held at the Britannia Stadium, Stoke-on-Trent, on Thursday 19 April. Members can register their vote in several ways - at one of Britannia's 253 branches, by post, online or at the AGM itself. For each vote received, Britannia has promised to donate 10p to its corporate charity, CLIC Sargent - the leading children's cancer charity.

Neville added: "We have a fantastic turnout at our AGM with more than 27 per cent of eligible members voting last year - the highest of any building society. This year we are aiming to get an even better response and I look forward to seeing the invaluable feedback from the member survey."

*The survey asks members to answer "yes" or "no" to the following questions:

  • Britannia should invest about 1 per cent of profit on charitable and community activity each year (in 2006, this would have worked out at about £790,000)
  • Britannia should focus on issues linked to our business, such as financial education
  • Britannia should reduce its environmental impact, for example, by switching to energy from renewable sources, even if it costs a little more
  • Britannia should do business only with organisations that share similar views to ours
  • Britannia should support communities in the UK only

Britannia is Britain's second largest mutual building society with almost three million members and a network of 253 branches.
