Making Your Application

What happens if my application fails the credit score and/or the affordability check?

There are many financial insititutions that will provide mortgages, and most of them will use slightly differing methods of assessing whether they are prepared to lend you the money. This might mean that one lender might accept you for a mortgage, while another one might decline you. If your application is declined, this won't be disclosed to the credit reference agency. Don't worry if this happens, the information is just for Britannia, and there won't be any effect - adverse or otherwise - on your credit record.

Occasionally, we do have to decline a mortgage application on the grounds of affordability or if information from the credit reference agency has influenced our decision. If this does happen, we will tell you the principal reason why your application has been declined.

If we have declined your application, you may contact your branch and ask us to reconsider our decision, although we may require additional information from you for our reassessment.

If you would like to discuss credit scoring and affordability in more detail, then don't hesitate to call your local branch or our Contact Centre who will be pleased to help you in any way they can.
