Number Partners

We're involved in a great national volunteering scheme called Number Partners that brings together business volunteers and schools in order to:

  • support schools in raising numeracy achievement
  • use number-related activities as a means to develop children's number skills
  • enhance children's mental skills in numeracy
  • develop children's confidence and motivation to learn
  • provide a positive insight into the business world.

Over the past two years employees have given up their lunchtimes to become involved in the programme – currently there are just over 100 volunteers in both Leek and London, with numbers growing all the time.

The volunteers had to complete a thorough induction process (including the necessary police check), which led to them becoming Science and Engineering Ambassadors. They go into local primary schools and play maths games with the children during their lunch hour every week during term time.

The programme offers volunteers an opportunity to give something back to the community in the form of assistance to young children who are lacking in numeracy confidence or social skills. This is hugely motivational and rewarding for both the children and employees alike.

In August 2005 Britannia was recognised as an organisation as a Science and Engineering ambassador by the Setpoint organisation. Setpoint is a nationwide organisation who are devoted to promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths careers to children.

As part of being involved in Number Partners, Britannia offers its volunteers the opportunity to study for a City and Guilds Mentoring Award, to date about 30% of our volunteers have taken this up.

Britannia is a committed Number Partner consortium member and has helped to design several games directly aimed at increasing Financial Literacy in young adults. This is an extremely worthwhile programme; helping young children to realise their full potential in numeracy - you can find out more about Number Partners here.
