Building a fairer society in your community.

We're not just a building society offering mortgages, insurance, loans and savings accounts, we're a society that also believes we have an important role to play in the wider community.

Our approach to community involvement is derived from our values and mutual heritage and provides us with a significant way of putting our values into practice and of contributing to the communities in which we live and work.

Having talked to our members and our people we have changed our priority areas to focus on where we believe we can make the biggest difference and this is by supporting education, wherever possible promoting an improvement in numeracy and/or financial capability.

Our investment into our local communities

At last year's Annual General Meeting our members endorsed an increase in this investment to at least 1% of net profits.

We also recognise the importance of providing practical support through our education initiatives and over the last three years our employees have been visiting primary schools through the Number Partners scheme, to help develop numeracy skills. A further programme called Fit4Finance introduces students within secondary schools to the basics of personal finance.

Every other year our people select a Corporate Charity to support. In 2006/2007, more than £290,000 was raised for 'CLIC Sargent', the UK's leading children's cancer charity. We will be announcing our Corporate Charity for 2008/2009 shortly.

We're also committed to other aspects of social responsibility, known throughout Britannia as Mutual Responsibility.
