Trade Unions

By offering our financial services to help support like-minded partners, we’re able to provide long term benefits to supporters of mutuality in the local communities in which union members live and work, as well as to our own customers. This is why we have long-term partnerships with Unison, USDAW, ATL and Unity.

UNISON

Britannia traces its history back to 1856, when the Leek and Moorlands Permanent Benefit Building Society was formed. The Society evolved into today's Britannia through a series of mergers, notably with the union-owned Nalgo Building Society in 1960.

NALGO (The National and Local Government Officers Association) merged with NUPE (the National Union of Public Employees) and COHSE (the Confederation of Health Service Employees) in 1993 to form UNISON. With more than 1.3 million members, UNISON is now Britain and Europe's biggest public sector union. Its members work in the public services, for private contractors providing public services and in the essential utilities.

Britannia’s partnership with UNISON is coming up to its 50th anniversary. UNISON remains a staunch supporter of mutuality and sees Britannia as a very important partner because we add value to their members’ financial products. Britannia continues to offer UNISON members an exclusive range of products, including UNISON savings accounts and special deals on mortgages.
