According to figures published by the Home Office, the cost of identity fraud in the UK is currently running at £1.2 billion a year and 25% of the population has apparently already suffered from it, or knows someone who has, yet over 21 million of us still don't do enough to protect ourselves. Identity theft can also be distressing or emotional, because it takes away your control over your own affairs and can damage your reputation. However, by taking a few sensible precautions and managing your personal information carefully, you can substantially reduce the likelihood of falling victim to this rising crime.

National Identity Fraud Prevention Week, an initiative developed by leading UK organisations, including the Metropolitan Police and CIFAS, is the UK's only nationwide campaign designed to raise consumer and business awareness of identity fraud and provide practical advice on how to take steps to protect yourself against the risk of becoming a victim.
